MACRO CLEAN

MACRO CLEAN Project is a collaborative initiative involving Sinop University and Marmara Municipalities Union from Türkiye, Batumi State University from Georgia, and Shumen University from Bulgaria. The project focuses on conducting research and establishing pilot implementations for the economic use of macroalgae while preventing and mitigating the impact of human activities on eutrophication and macroalgal blooms in the Black Sea region.

The overall objective of the project is to develop a comprehensive research methodology for the study of macroalgae, improve laboratory infrastructure, create feasibility plans for the use of macroalgae, raise awareness among stakeholders, and promote cooperation as well as innovative cleaning processes and technologies. By contributing to the economic utilization of macroalgae, mitigating the effects of eutrophication, and encouraging sustainable resource use in the Black Sea region, Project aims to create a positive change in the current situation.

The common challenge addressed by Project is the issue of eutrophication and macroalgal blooms in the Black Sea. These challenges arise from factors such as land-based pollution and changes in marine living resources. The project aims to tackle these issues through a comprehensive approach involving research, capacity building, feasibility assessments, awareness-raising, and cooperation.

The main outputs and results of the project are as follows:

  1. Comprehensive Research Methodology: Project will develop a robust research methodology for studying macroalgae, including clear objectives, standardized protocols, and effective data management practices.
  2. Modernized Laboratory Infrastructure: Project will improve laboratory infrastructure at partner universities to support comprehensive research on macroalgae, including equipment and capacity-building support for researchers.
  3. Feasibility Plans: Project will develop feasibility plans to assess the technical, financial, economic, and social viability of pilot applications for the use of macroalgae, particularly in fertilizer and bioplastic production.
  4. Stakeholder Awareness: Through workshops, training sessions, clean-up events, and an international conference, Project will raise awareness among stakeholders and target groups about issues related to macroalgae, eutrophication, and sustainable resource use.
  5. Report on Methodologies and Technologies: Project will compile a report on collection and cleaning methodologies and technologies related to macroalgae and eutrophication, providing valuable insights into best practices and technological advancements.
  6. Start-up Support: Project will offer training and mentorship sessions for selected start-ups to support business and product development in the macroalgae sector.

The planned approach of Project includes activities such as forming research teams, developing research methodologies, conducting fieldwork and laboratory analyses, organizing workshops and training sessions, implementing action plans, and facilitating knowledge exchange and cooperation. Since challenges like eutrophication and macroalgal blooms in the Black Sea region transcend national borders, transnational cooperation is essential to achieve the project’s objectives and outcomes. The pollution and degradation of the Black Sea stem from activities within the basin area, and effectively addressing the root causes and mitigating the impacts requires coordinated efforts among different countries. Collaboration among partners from multiple countries is vital to share knowledge, resources, and best practices, promote innovation, and support sustainable solutions at the regional level.
